Replacement of pipes in Rifle Range low-cost flats to complete in January

Seventy-year-old grandmother H’ng Guay Bee is grateful for the project to replace old sewer pipes and toilet bowls at her unit in one of Penang’s oldest low-cost housing schemes — Rifle Range.

Her unit is one of the 3,744 units which benefited from the state government’s allocation of RM5.4mil to replace aging sewer pipes and to fix toilet bowls at the nine blocks of low-cost flats in Rifle Range.

“I have been residing here since 1971 and the pipes had not been changed since I moved in until now.

“We are happy with the replacement of the old piping system but we hope they can hasten the speed of their work,” she said when met at her unit in Rifle Range recently.

State Town and Country Planning, Housing and Arts Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the project was scheduled to be completed by January next year.

He said the pipes had to be changed to avoid leakage in the future.

“To date, the replacement work has been completed at 1,434 units in nine blocks, leaving a remaining 2,310 units.

“The Public Works Department (JKR), which is the implementing agency for the project, was having difficulties in arranging appointment dates with some owners. This is causing a slight delay in the completion,” he said.

Wong said the residents who have fixed the appointment dates should follow through accordingly and try not to be absent from their units when the workers arrived.

Kebun Bunga assemblyman Jason Ong Khan Lee said residents should also not misuse the JKR contractors by asking them to work on other home improvement jobs in their units.

“We urge JKR to monitor their contractors and advise them not to work on other tasks as requested by the unit owners,” he said.

40年來首次大工程 打鎗埔換新廁所過年

（檳城26日訊）三度延後的打鎗埔組屋基設提升工程，預計在明年1月全面竣工，讓打鎗埔居民可以在較舒適環境下迎接農曆新年。

這項由州政府撥款540萬令吉的提升工程，分為2個部份，其一是在組屋單位外裝置排污管及水管，其二則是在組屋單位內換馬桶及鋪地磚。

這也是打鎗埔組屋40年來首次展開大型提升工程。打鎗埔組屋共有9棟，裝置排污管及水管工程目前已完成80%。

檳州房屋委員會主席黃漢偉表示，由於承包商很難與居民預約時間進屋更換馬桶及鋪地磚，以及在施工時面對技術問題，導致完工日期一再展延。

“A至E座組屋共有2112個單位，目前完成了834個單位的提升工作，而F、G、H及J座共有1632個單位，當中600個單位的提升工程已完成。”

他週二前往打鎗埔H座組屋巡視時說，每個單位需5天時間完成提升工作，因此每棟組屋的提升工程需花3個月。
“以這個工作速度，相信整個提升基設計劃將在明年1月完工。”

他表示，在這過度期，居民必定會面對諸多不便，如不能如廁，承包商已經把每棟組屋的其中兩個單位的廁所列為替代廁所。

他說，要更換整座組屋的水管及排污管是一項挑戰，希望居民體諒及多加忍耐。
